Spectral Theory

Has its physical origins in the theory of localized vibrations in a variety of contexts from mechanics and acoustics to atoms and molecules. Mathematically, it extends the matrix eigenvalue problem in linear algebra to that of linear operators in infinite dimensional spaces.
